the second stage is prolonged and difficult. A weakened heart might well be strong enough to endure a short labour, whereas a stronger heart might show evidence of distress in a protracted second stage. In formulating a prognosis much must depend upon the degree and severity of the symptoms in relation to the duration of the pregnancy. Obviously a given degree of cardiac distress at the fifth month may be of more serious import than at the ninth.
